Dr. Flojaune Cofer Launches 2024 Campaign for Mayor, Pledging to Prove that “More is Possible”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Public health expert, senior policy director, and former Chair of the city’s Measure U Community Advisory Committee, Dr. Flojaune Cofer, announced her campaign today for mayor of Sacramento, pledging to put her experience to work in creating a city that meets the needs of all residents.

“City Hall has a responsibility to ensure safe and affordable shelter, job opportunities, and safety to everyone who lives here,” said Cofer. “I am running for mayor because it breaks my heart to watch our neighbors suffer when we have the resources to care for them. More is possible.”

Cofer’s campaign is built on taking bold, creative action to tackle long-standing challenges, such as establishing a public bank to help fund affordable housing initiatives, and creating a hub for green jobs to both energize the local economy and help bring the city to zero emissions by 2030.

Local leaders of all backgrounds, including nonprofit leader and former Vice Chair of the Measure U Committee Kim Williams, and former Director of the Sacramento Department of Community Response, Bridgitte Dean, are rallying around Cofer, who would be the first ever Black woman to serve as mayor of Sacramento.

“Dr. Cofer’s leadership, fearlessness, and advocacy in her efforts to create lasting change in Sacramento have led to collaborative partnerships and crucial conversations focused on system change, mental health, homelessness, and community safety,” said Dean, whose former department oversees alternative responses to emergency calls to the city. “As Sacramento’s mayor she will leverage our existing city resources to ensure safety, dignity, and respect for everyone.”

“Dr. Flo,” as she’s often called by the community, is originally from Pittsburgh, PA–another midsized river city–and has lived in Sacramento for 15 years. She moved to the California capital to serve in a fellowship at the state Department of Public Health before moving on to work on policy for Public Health Advocates. She’s been involved in organizations such as the Urban League Young Professionals and the Nehemiah Emerging Leaders Program, and has served on the Mayor’s Commission on Climate Change and the Active Transportation Commission. Most recently, she chaired the Measure U Committee for four terms.
