Dr. Flojaune Cofer’s Campaign for Sacramento Mayor:Nearly 1,000 individual contributions raise $160,000

Public filing underscores momentum for Dr. Flo’s history-making run

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Dr. Flojaune Cofer – public health expert and candidate for mayor of Sacramento – has raised $159,967.59 in her first contributions report, exceeding all expectations.

As the first Black woman to ever run for mayor in California’s capital, and as the only woman remaining in the race, Dr. Cofer raised $40,000 more than current mayor Darrell Steinberg did in the same filing timeline last mayoral election cycle.

“The people of Sacramento are building a movement for change,” said Dr. Cofer. “More is possible for our community when we act with courage. Our people-powered campaign generated nearly 1,000 individual contributions in just two months, a sign that this city is ready to finally move past business as usual and tackle the housing crisis.”

Dr. Cofer’s top priorities are housing and public safety. Because her commitment is to Sacramento residents, the campaign rejects contributions from groups that benefit from the status quo, including corporate PACs, big oil, police interests, big tobacco, and real estate interests that do not fully support tenants’ rights.

"Historically, successful mayoral races have been funded by the few and not the many,” said Bobby Dalton Roy, a lifelong Sacramento resident, active labor organizer, fellow alumnus of the Nehemiah Emerging Leaders Program and contributor to Dr. Cofer’s campaign. “Dr. Flo shows us that you don’t necessarily need the deep pockets of corporations. You can win with the support of everyday hard-working people, inspired youth, and families who realize that more is possible."

Mayoral races in Sacramento often see hundreds of thousands of dollars roll in from corporate lobbying interests, particularly when state legislators and lifetime politicians enter the fray. Dr. Cofer’s campaign lights the way for a new direction.

“Dr. Flo,” as she’s often called by the community, is the interim Executive Director for state policy nonprofit Public Health Advocates, where she leads public health equity programs and has spearheaded successful initiatives to pass legislation at the state and local level on youth trauma prevention, maternal health and wellness, reproductive rights, equitable pandemic recovery and more. She’s held leadership roles with the Urban League Young Professionals and Girl Scouts Heart of Central California, and has served on the Mayor’s Commission on Climate Change and the Active Transportation Commission. Dr. Flo chaired the Measure U Committee for four terms.
